The US of A might just be across the border from “The true north, strong and free” but as far as Stripchat is concerned payments there still need to be in US$, at least mostly.
Want to buy Stripchat tokens, but you live in Canada? Then you’ll get these choices, and only one supports charging in C$.
When you’ve decided to tip a Streamate model you’ll need some tokens, and that means buying them. Hit the add tokens button and choose one of these:
- Credit/Debit card – that covers, Visa, Master, Maestro, Discover etc
- PayPal
- Interac
- paysafecard
- Skrill
- Bitcoin, Ether, and other crypto
But of these 6 all but five just give the prices in “$”, but if you do the math you will realize that they are talking US$.
Let me go through them one at a time.
For a Stripchat token purchase made with a Credit/Debit card the base price is 90 tokens for $9.99, or 200 tokens for $20.99. That works out to just a little over 10 cents a token. Remember that models like me get half of that, so every token you tip is 5 cents in my pocket. Five US cents that is.
It does get a lot cheaper if you buy tokens in larger bulks though. Spending the maximum of $199.99 gets you 2,350 tokens so only about 8 and a half cents (USD$0.85) per token of which I still get 5 cents from your tips or private shows expenses.
But buying with a Canadian card means you are going to pay credit card fees and have a lousy exchange rate if you don’t have an international card such as a Wise debit card. You will end up paying something though, I can’t say how much as it depends on your bank.
PayPal is basically the same, you will be charged in US dollars and subject to PayPal’s currency conversion fees. This can add a significant amount to your total cost, as PayPal’s exchange rates are often not as good as those provided by your bank. If you use PayPal for other things then this might be ok, but you should know what to expect.
I would have expected Interac to be a different story. Since it is a Canadian payment method, you might think you’ll be charged in Canadian dollars. However, Stripchat still processes these payments via AstroPay and the charge is denominated in US$ again.
paysafecard is another option, but like the previous methods, it too will charge you in US dollars. And this is the only one out of this 6 that shows C$ as the currency option on its website. CLick through and the balance of your paysafecard will be in C$ and you can use it in C$.
The rates are different and not as good though. The basic choice is C$10, which works out to US$7.34 (as I write this) and gets you only 58 tokens. This means you will be paying almost US$0.13 per token, that works about 14% more than if you had paid by card – but not including your credit card fees.
Skrill is also available, but once again, the transactions are handled in US dollars. This means you’ll be subject to Skrill’s currency conversion rates and any additional fees they impose. It’s worth noting that Skrill’s rates can sometimes be more competitive than PayPal’s, but it’s still an extra cost you need to consider.
Lastly, there’s the option of using cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ether. While this method might seem appealing due to its decentralized nature, the value of your crypto holdings will be converted to US dollars at the time of the transaction. This means you’re also subject to the volatility of cryptocurrency prices, which can fluctuate significantly in a short period. Additionally, there may be transaction fees associated with converting your crypto to USD, further increasing the cost.
If you want the privacy of crypto but don’t want volatility consider using a stablecoin such as USDC or Tether. These are pegged to the value of the US dollar, so you won’t have to worry about price fluctuations. Keep in mind, though, that you’ll still be converting to USD when making the purchase, which means transaction fees and conversion costs might still apply.
These different choices are roughly ranked in order of simple to private. Each one has pros and cons and it’s important to weigh them based on your personal preferences and financial situation. For instance, using a credit/debit card might be straightforward but comes with potential fees and poor exchange rates. On the other hand, cryptocurrencies offer more privacy but can be unpredictable due to market volatility.
Decide what makes the most sense for you based on what is important to you. If minimizing extra costs is your main concern, using a credit/debit card or Interac might be the easiest options, despite their drawbacks. However, if privacy is paramount, cryptocurrencies or paysafecard could be the better choice. Always be sure to double-check the fees and exchange rates before making your final decision.
