“Welcome offers” are great, but do check the fine print! Over at Camsoda I was just prompted with a 1-minute-free type of offer, which sounds great, but do check out what you have to do to get it.

Turning on the automatic purchasing of new tokens is what you have to do. Now that is a perfectly ok thing to do, but don’t do it unless you understand what you are doing.

Make sure you read the fine print carefully, so you know what you’re agreeing to. It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a free offer, but you don’t want any surprises later. Recurring payments can sneak up on you if you’re not careful. Always check if there’s an option to turn off auto-renewal or cancel the service before you’re charged. Being aware of these details helps you enjoy the offer without any unexpected costs.

You have to turn on the automatic top-up and choose one of these three options:

  • 50 tokens for $6.99 – that is just under 14 cents a token
  • 100 tokens for $10.99 – almost 11 cents a token
  • 200 tokens for $20.99 – about 10 and a half cents a token

So watch out for the default settings that is not the best deal. All those “.99” prices look nice but hide the actual costs.

Remember, you can always adjust your preferences later, but it’s best to start off with one that makes sense.

You are not going to use this option unless you are a regular user, so consider your habits before deciding. If you’re just exploring, you might not need a large number of tokens. However, if you find yourself running out of tokens frequently, a bigger package could save you money in the long run.

Change your choice, both by turning it on/off and also the amounts to add and the threshold to trigger the buy, in the “My Account” / “Settings & Privacy”.

Now don’t get me wrong, this is a useful feature that other sites have and I’ve written about it before. It can make your experience smoother and more enjoyable by ensuring you never run out of tokens at a crucial moment.

You still have to stay in control and make sure it fits your budget and spending habits.
