I was fixing a friends PC trying to make the http://www.chathostess.com/ software work. the software will work for a few minutes then it will crash.. here are the computers details..
Computer1
Windows 2000 /SP4 with all updates
Latest drivers for VGA/Sound
Latest Java
Latest Software from chathostess.com (chathostess.exe installer)
** have also tried it with just SP2
** uninstalled the chathostess program then installed http://www.chathostess.com/software/performer.exe(i think this is the old one).. same results...
** removed latest java and used the one from win2k.. it worked for few hours then same errors again.. video.exe crashed...
Computer2
Windows XP SP1
Latest drivers for VGA/Sound
Latest Java
Latest Software from chathostess.com (chathostess.exe installer)
** Installed SP2.. same results..
** Reinstalled OS then download latest drivers and latest Java.. same errors again. video.exe crashed
please advice me on what to do next.. thank u.. |

Have you tried emailing their support and asking them if they know what the problem is?
When video.exe crashes Drwatson will record a logfile of what happened. You can usually locate the cause of the crash from the drwtsn32.log file. It could be a driver compatibilty issue or something. By the way this site http://labmice.techtarget.com/troubleshooting/default.htm is quite good for diagnosing problems on Windows 2000.
The Performer software comes with Sun Java v1.4.2. The latest version of Sun java is 1.5.x, so if you installed this on your PC it may cause conflicts. You could try installing the same version http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html (J2SE v 1.4.2_07 JRE includes the JVM technology -->Download J2SE JRE ) on your PC, but in theory you don't need Java, unless you want to browse Java sites while working as a chathost. |

thanks for the reply.. i emailed their support but no luck.. after installing the performer software with Sun Java v1.4.2 i removed the latest version of java.. with that it worked for a few hours then crashed again..  anymore suggestions? please help... |

My thought is do you really want to work for a company with unreliable software? There are so many choices... Why not try another?

If you post the drwatson.log here then it would probably be easier to track the problem down. Another idea is to
1) install the latest Sun Java engine from http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/getjava/BrowserRedirect?locale=en&host=java.com:80 or manual offline installation here http://jdl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=9954
2) Delete the jre directory from C:\Program Files\Firecracker Software\ChatHostess.com Performer Video Client and run video.exe. It then uses the Java runtime engine that is installed on your PC for Internet Explorer/Firefox etc.
I'm not sure why they bundled the java runtime engine with the software, they also included some system dll's like msvcr70.dll etc which is bad practise, considering some are out of date on my winxp system!. Hony has a good point, if the site can't support your models there are plenty of other sites that do. |
