Chat working for other sites? Firefox works with most java and flash sites just fine. ActiveX sites won't work though. I think that's what camsathome uses if I recall.

none of the amsterdam stuff works with gecko browsers (firefox, mozilla proper, netscape) or opera; they are from the old days when activex was the in thing (before the m$ exploits became BIG news)
they keep with it now because windows xp, sp1a, and sp2 dont include a jvm (activex is guaranteed to be on a windows box) |

But under XPSP2 you get even more cautious security warnings before ActiveX will install -- so it would do them good to get a java version working too.

true, but that requires work, lol
most businesspeople think its just set it up, then sit back and hire other people to rake in the money for you, thats why most businesses are resistant to change |

| to get it to work, you will probably (i aint installing activeX on firefox) need to download the activeX and a user agent extension, then change your user agent to explorer's (your broswer will now report itself as ie) download their activeX chat applet, then enjoy |

I tried Firefox and I really like it's simple and clean user interface. My main gripe with firefox are webpages that don't display correctly. I did some tests to see how much memory each web browser consumes.
Simple webpage
firefox.exe 18 megs
iexplore.exe 20 megs
opera.exe 14 megs
Complex webpage (600KB)
firefox.exe 26 megs
iexplore.exe 24 megs
opera.exe 18 megs
Cam site running Java
Firefox (Sun Java) 46 megs
Opera (Sun Java) 34 megs
Opera is still the best web browser but you have to pay for it or suffer advertising banners. I like the way you can completely configure Opera and it is much more compatible with sites, plays embedded media streams and is probably still the fastest web browser. A more indepth review of web browsers can be read here
By the way they updated Firefox to v1.01 for most languages, it addresses 650 bugs, 25 security holes and a few crash related fixes. I believe you have to uninstall the previous version before installing v1.01, all your settings and bookmarks/extensions will be saved if you do not delete the folder. I guess the days of Firefox being more secure and safe are over because advertising companies are catching on http://www.wired.com/news/business/0,1367,66726,00.html !

Good info, thanks. Actually the firefox. 1.0.1 can be installed over the top of the existing one and seems fine.

actually firefox doesnt render pages incorrectly, the pages were written incorrectly; firefox is very anal about how it displays a web page, this was done to prevent bad web pages from getting onto the net
ie will allow massive errors and still display correctly because its what end users want; but developers would load a page in ie and say its done because it looks right, not knowing it was horribly done |

I use Macromedia Dreamweaver MX (http://www.macromedia.com/software/dreamweaver/?promoid=home_prod_dw_082403) to design html pages and Firefox does not always display the html correctly. I thought this was used by most professional software companies in designing websites.
There's a nasty security bug in both Opera 7.x and the old version of Firefox (1.01 fixes it a little), you can check if your browser is vulnerable here http://secunia.com/multiple_browsers_idn_spoofing_test/ . So if you use Opera upgrade to the latest 8.x beta 2 or Firefox 1.01. Makes you think twice before you enter your credit card details somewhere! |

no software is perfect, for ie6 i strongly suggest the netcrast toolbar http://toolbar.netcraft.com/ (its netcraft, enough said)
as for validating your html code, either do it the old fashioned way of actually loading it up in various browsers or go to the w3c validator http://validator.w3.org/; css isnt fully supported in any browser, but firefox has much better support
eexplorer still has its own rendering issues http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_Explorer |
