My girlfriend is looking to get on a few webcam sites and host. Right now we have standard logitec webcam. I notice on some sites that they require hosts to have video capture cards and also video recorders. My problem is I dont know exactly what I need? I am loking for something inexpensive that will have good quality video ...I see some digital cameras that have webcam possibility but I am not sure this is what I need? Also as far as a video capture card what do I need to get? I am sure it will have to be compatible with the camera. Well basically any info on this would help thanx. |

| maybe one of the ati all-in-wonder graphics cards, cheaper than a vidcap card; they have video and audio inputs and are decent quality (almost prosumer level) |

A few studio's I know use the Canon VC-C4, you can probably pick one up quite cheap now as I think they have been discontinued. They have the best image quality and I would suggest using the $30-$40 xcapture card or one of the latest wintv $30-40 capture cards.
If you're on a budget then a good webcam is the logitech 4000 or even better the Philips Toucam Pro II, but the Canon has real zoom, pan and far better image quality with fast motion and various types of lighting conditions. |

For PeekShows the video output from the capture card or webcam should be 24 bit rgb and size 320X240 .....
Always check the specs on the card or camera prior to purchase....
Some of the new webcams have quality comparable to a video camera/capture card setup...Though the capture card method is preferred....
As far as cameras: I have used a variety of webcams mostly in the $20 to $50 range.....All have less than the desired quality....
I strongly recommend getting a video camera no matter how old or what brand....The quality of every video camera setup I have seen exceeds that of the best webcams I have seen to date.....The main things to look for on a video camera are : RCA output, S video output (if necissary) amd remote for zoom... Sunpak pan/tilt heads are a nice addition for the fulll time model......
Recommended capture cards: ATI TV Wonder VE and wintvgo.....I have also used Pinnicle but you have to make sure the video format and size are compatable with the site you will broacdcast on....I have also used $10 capture cards from a surplus computer wherehouse, again it depends on the site though......Be careful of the high end capture cards as they often have compatability issues since they are made more for production and editing than for simple low quality(in comparison) broadcasting....The main problems with high end cards are typically having to do with the video size, since some high end cards do not support small video sizes......
I hope this helps......
Just remember quality is more important that price.... |

Good tips Neil -- doesn't matter how pretty you are if the camera gives a fuzzy image you can't be seen!
On the other hand -- a little lack of focus can do wonders to disguise poor skin!

Lol, yeah lots of models adjust the contrast so high on the camera that you can't even see their nose anymore haha. |

For me , myself I use a sony handi cam . I also have a videum card in my computer . however i found the sony running from it's usb to work great , you don't have to adjust any thing when using the USB wire .
The single most Important things I've found get the fastest internet service you can , a really good computer , and LIGHTS < LOTS Of LIGHTS . . stick to single back ground colors . Have fun when you're working . |

Light! Oh yes, we become like any performer and sweat under the hot lights! Trying not to squint because it is so bright, I used to want to wear sunglasses!
The single background colour though I don't agree with -- it makes people automatically presume you are studio girl.

Hony | Maybe i should restate the single color back ground part , back grounds with lots of colors or the one that look like a window to the beach or lake slow down the video feed . I used single color back grounds , but I might use 4 in one day , and never the same one two days in a row . . |

Variety sounds good to me! Do guys prefer it when you have a "bedroom"/"home" set? I always just did shows in at my computer desk which means my whole messy flat is visible behind!

| I prefer the bedroom/living room background. Some rooms look like a sheet was tossed on the wall. |

| i like it too, the home studio never looks like a real studio, and lots of guys prefer women who work out of their homes; no evil boss to take money and harass the girls |
