Hello,
I'm starting a live cam site soon and was wondering for a fixed rate what people here think is the right per minute fee to charge for private session to ensure good business assuming everything else is good with the site and service.
Also does it matter at all if there is not 2way cam so customer cant use his cam as well as some sites allow?
One other thing, I've read posts on this sites where people are saying some chathosts on CamContacts or other sites are charging as low as 50 cents a minute yet sites that charge more normal rates are still in business. Could anyone explain this?

Cool. Have you selected a name yet?
I think you are missing the boat if you intend to have a site with services that are identical to 100 (or more?) other websites. There's no such thing as an analysis "just" about price. Price is one side and benefit is on the other... and the coin is called "value".
Camhosts aren't plug-N-play, interchangeable elements of the operation - they ARE the operation ( mostly ). Who you attract, hire, select, allow, whatever is crucial to the success - and to the price point you can set.
My suggestion is, concentrate on making the "value proposition" better than your competitors and you stand a better chance to be profitable (in the case of your business, that's value for the consumer and the supplier since you have enormous competition for camhosts).
Using my new Fan Club software for your camhosts is just one example. There are many ways to improve the connection between the consumer and the supplier.
If you offer something special that the customers value but they can't get everywhere else, you'll have more repeat business and word of mouth on the demand side. ("Hey Joe, did you hear about DanielsCams.com? It has a Fan Club screensaver thingy with all the women.")
If you have something special for the camhosts that they find valuable and can't get everywhere else, you will attract more (and the best?) camhosts on the supply side.

I don't believe that's a must-have feature for success. Every little bit helps, of course, but there are sites making money without that.

Again, what do you get for your 50 cents?
What cam software will you be using for your site? Have you decided?
Mine works no matter what you select, just curious.

Who uses 2 way anyway? That is really a different chat scene -- anywebcam etc.
As for 50 cents! Either you get a freebie -- or you pay $1.49/min more likely.

Thanks for the replies so far from both of you.
Yeah I've got a name and all, actually I've been working on this for a LONG while, it's not a 15 minute old plan.
And about the other thing, I've had my own cam software designed, which is mostly finished being programmed now. What cam software do you use Daniel? By the way that's a good name you have, but I'm a bit biased on that matter for obvious reasons :)

That could be a big advantage over using an off the shelf package - but I can understand the "long time" part.
I don't have a cam site myself. If I did, I'd create my own software in Java. Or possibly partner with a cam-site software vender to extend their product with some special features that they could resell to their customer base.
I make an Internet software product that creates a new way to communicate with an audience online. I've extended the best features of the Web, Email and Instant Messaging, eliminated the mistakes (such as spam, viruses and forgotten bookmarks) and combined it into a single product that has the repetition and ease-of-use of a screensaver.
Each of your cam hosts could have their own Fan Club to prevent the "out of sight out of mind" problem that everyone else on the web has.

Prices i have seen range from 1.49 to 5.99 a minute |

Well intelligent people congregate so maybe that explains all the Daniel's. Anyway thanks for everyone’s information and in reply to the first Daniel nothing for the public to see yet since site hasn’t launched etc and I’ll be sure to check out your software in the coming days.
