I've got a bunch of women that want to start an amateur webcam site. Since I've got the most technical background, I'm in charge of that stuff. But I've only done small personal pages (nothing commecial) and the last time I did anything with webcams was in the cuseeme days. So:

1. what kind of hosting, dedicated, colocation or ... ?
2. what kind of bandwidth is needed? could this be run from an ordinary home user's isp?
3. what are some reccomedations for high quality and entry level: webcams, camcorders, video capture cards?
4. how do you protect the streams so that only paying customers have access?
5. any advice on doing this from linux?
6. any other informative sites that could help me?

Well there is 2 options they could go out and become independent for them self, OR you can have a studio account for existing sites i.e ImLive, Streamate, LiveJasmin, sstreamray/cams, spread4u

pretty much any of the popular sites listed on here that have a studio account available, but if they want to be self reliant, and self efficient they can go to the same sites and be independents and just do it for them self.

you might be technical back in the day but things have changes alot over the years. and now with the business being soo geared for girls to get off thier asses and do it themself what do they really need you for, that they can't do for them self if they really wanted it bad enough.

It might harder for them to do it them self, but its more worth it in the end.

Depending on how many streams you will be running and or if you will be running the streams through your server and your traffic etc. I would start at dedicated and if things pan out and you start putting a load on the dedicated server then you could look at other options and by then if your putting that kind of load on your dedicated server you will be able to afford an upgrade.
But depending on how you implement the cams (yahoo /eyeball etc and billing through website) you could even go with a virtual server with a dedicated IP to start.

Are you talking about for the hosting? I am assuming you mean for the model. As far as for a model broadcasting if you mean Cable or DSL yes that would be sufficient.

I know alot of girls that like the mid range panasonic usb cams. Another studio I knows recomended A4 Tech cams not expensive and a quality feed

Alot of that will depend on your billing solution but most will use .htaccess / .htpassord to block a member subdirectory in one way or another.

If your proficient in PHP I would go with a linux host. I actually prefer a linux host for most any type of hosting. APACHE and PHP being two big reasons. The abundance of open source scripts another reason.

Another idea for you and the girls to think about is yahoo cam shows then you dont have to worry about the streams running on your site.
